Many pilgrims treat Katra only as a stopover, but there is more to see than the shrine itself. If you are staying at Niharika Bhawan for more than a night, or if your group has time after darshan, here are places worth adding to your plan.
On the Yatra route
- Banganga: an early stop on the route, associated with a sacred stream where many pilgrims pause.
- Charan Paduka: a small shrine on the way up, where footprints are venerated.
- Ardhkuwari (Garbh Joon): a cave temple roughly midway along the route and a natural resting point.
- Sanji Chhat: a high point on the route, also the landing point for helicopter passengers.
- Bhairon Ghati: a hilltop temple visited after darshan, known for wide mountain views. A ropeway has connected the shrine area with Bhairon Ghati; check current status before you travel.
Around Katra
- Shiv Khori: a revered cave shrine of Lord Shiva in the Reasi area, reached by a longer drive from Katra. Plan a full day.
- Baba Dhansar: a quiet spot near a waterfall, popular for a short outing.
- Nau Devi and Jhajjar Kotli: a temple and a scenic picnic spot suitable for families.
Katra market, food and souvenirs
The market near the bus stand sells dry fruits, shawls, woollens, wooden items and religious souvenirs. Vegetarian restaurants serve North Indian thalis, rajma-chawal and local sweets. If you are buying dry fruits or woollens, compare prices at a few shops before buying.
Planning a rest day
After darshan and the descent, most people feel exhausted. A rest day in Katra before the journey home is a good idea, especially with children and elders. Keep your room for the night you return; see our room options.
How to fit it all in
- Day 1: arrive, check in, register and rest.
- Day 2: start the climb, darshan, return when ready.
- Day 3: rest, shop in Katra, or take a day trip.
