The shrine is open throughout the year, so there is no single “correct” month. The best time for you depends on what you want: comfortable weather, smaller crowds or a festival atmosphere. Here is a season-by-season view to help you plan your Katra stay and book your room at the right time.
Spring (March to April)
Mild weather and fresh greenery make spring a favourite. Chaitra Navratri falls in this window and brings very large crowds, so book your room and travel arrangements well in advance and expect longer queues.
Summer (May to June)
School holidays bring many families. Days can be hot, so many pilgrims prefer to start the climb in the evening or at night. Carry plenty of water, take regular breaks and avoid walking in the hottest hours.
Monsoon (July to September)
Rain can make the track slippery, and heavy rain in the hills can disrupt movement or helicopter services. If you travel in this season, check weather and Shrine Board announcements before leaving home, carry rain gear and keep your plans flexible.
Autumn (October to November)
Clear skies and comfortable temperatures make this one of the best times. Sharad Navratri and Diwali bring crowds, so confirm your room booking early.
Winter (December to February)
It is cold, and the higher sections of the route can feel very chilly, with snow possible in some years. Pack warm clothing and expect early sunsets. Crowds are usually lower except around the New Year holidays.
Festivals and peak days to plan around
- Chaitra Navratri (spring) and Sharad Navratri (autumn): the busiest periods
- Diwali and the surrounding holidays
- Summer school holidays
- New Year week
Outside these windows, weekdays are usually calmer than weekends.
Time of day matters too
Many pilgrims start in the evening and climb through the night to avoid heat and crowds, then rest in Katra the next day. Others prefer an early-morning start. There is no wrong answer, but a comfortable room before and after makes either plan easier.
Tips for any season
- Reach Katra at least a day before your planned climb.
- Book your room before peak days; see our rooms.
- Keep a plan B for weather, especially if using the helicopter service.
- Complete your yatra registration in advance.
